Let a Mule Carry Your Gear — Lighten Your Hike-In or Hike-Out
If your Grand Canyon rafting trip requires hiking the Bright Angel Trail — whether you’re hiking in for the Lower Canyon or hiking out after an Upper Canyon trip — the mule/duffel service can make a world of difference. Instead of carrying a 25–30 lb pack down (or up) 4,400+ feet of elevation, you simply drop your duffel at the rim, hike with a light daypack, and your gear is delivered to the bottom (or top) for you. When available, it’s the easiest, safest, most comfortable way to tackle the demanding trail while keeping your energy focused on the adventure ahead.
This is one of the most helpful services for guests with knee issues, older travelers, families, photographers, or anyone who prefers to enjoy the trail without the weight.
You must book the service directly with the mule concessionaire for your exact hike date (either inbound or outbound). Space is limited and fills early.
2. Drop your duffel the afternoon before your hike
Bags must be checked in at the designated South Rim mule barn — usually by 3:30 PM the day prior.
3. Duffel size & weight limits
All bags must meet National Park Service mule requirements:
Soft-sided duffel (no hard frames)
Max size: 36″ × 20″ × 13″
Max weight: 30 lbs
No loose straps, dangling items, or external attachments
Oversize or overweight bags may be rejected or charged for an additional duffel.
4. Gear is delivered to the river or the rim
Inbound (Lower Canyon) hikers: Your duffel will be delivered to the bottom of the canyon — typically Boat Beach by Phantom Ranch.
Outbound (Upper Canyon) hikers: If allowed by your outfitter, the mule will carry your gear back to the rim.
Important Availability Notice — Read Before Relying on Duffel Service
The mule service is not available for all trips or all outfitters.
Lower Canyon Trips (Hike Down to Start Your Trip)
A handful of outfitters allow inbound duffel service. However, this service is time-sensitive, limited, and never guaranteed. Guests must be capable of hiking Bright Angel with their own pack in case duffel service is unavailable. Consider duffel support a bonus, not an expectation.
Label your duffel clearly with name, date, and outfitter
Pack soft — use compression sacks inside your duffel
Plan for weight checks — 30 lbs is a strict limit
Keep essentials with you — especially medications
Confirm with your outfitter whether they accept duffel service for your trip
Why Use Duffel Service?
Hiking Bright Angel with a light pack isn’t just easier — it’s safer. The trail is steep, exposed, hot, and requires careful pacing. Guests who use duffel service often report:
Faster recovery
More comfort
Lower knee/hip strain
Better energy on the river
A far more enjoyable start or finish to their trip
